Feels Like the First Time

It's 2018, and I think I’m ready to start a blog. I’ve heard that all the cool kids are doing it, so I thought it might behoove my sister and me to get going on our dear diary, you know, since we’ve had this blog page up and active for some months now without having put a blog post up for you lovelies to read Now, I’ve personally kept a diary/journal (is it a diary until you reach a certain age, at which point it becomes a journal, or are these two distinct things, I wonder?) since January 1, 1991. One of my grandmothers got me a diary with a ballet slipper on it (I’ve never been in ballet and certainly wasn’t in ballet then, so why she chose a diary for a ballerina for me remains a mystery) for Christmas in 1990. It locked and had a tiny baby key that was literally almost good for nothing. It certainly didn’t keep my sister out of it, that much I know for sure. Because back then I was what you might call a “perfectionist,” I wanted to be sure to start that diary no sooner and no later than January 1st, 1991, and so I waited an entire six days before writing in it. My first entry was lame, but I was what, 11 years old? I still have that diary and enjoy flipping through its pages when I need a good laugh.

I came across a thing called a blog challenge tonight, and I thought that this might be a good way to get into the habit of blogging. Now, these prompts probably aren’t what I would have chosen for myself, but it’s a good place to start, I think, especially since I don’t know what the status is of my sister’s diary habits are and I know she has never blogged in her life. We’ll spend the rest of this month answering these prompts so we can get used to this and so you can get to know us. How does that sound? And because I’m currently a perfectionist in recovery, and it’s January 6th and not January 1st, I’m combining the first six prompts for January into the remainder of my entry.

So. Here goes.

  1. What are you most looking forward to? At this moment, as I write this, I am most looking forward to the winter weekend getaway my partner and I have planned for my birthday next month. We did this last year, and it was super off grid, and I can’t wait to get back to the cabin.
  2. Three goals for this month – I have my own goals and then I have things that I know that I “must” get done. This month I would like to try a bone broth cleansing fast. I saw Gabrielle Bernstein do it on Instagram, and she seems pretty hip and what not, so I want to do that to.I think I’m going to start on Monday. I’ll let you know how it goes. Another goal is to finish chapters two, three, and one of my dissertation. This has gone on long enough and it’s time to put the petal to the metal. That and my dissertation chair is basically at her rope’s end with me and my incessant dragging out and along. A third goal is to start working out regularly again. It’s been since September 22, 2016 since I’ve been a regular exerciser, and that’s just nutty.
  3. Describe your day in ten words – I’m going to describe my Friday in ten words. Sweaty.  Audible while driving.  Unhoarding.  Bank and banking.  Social media.
  4. Something you’re looking forward to – Hmmm.  I really feel like this is pretty much the same prompt as number one, is it not? I guess I could pick another thing I’m looking forward to. I have two more trips coming up after my birthday weekend, and one is going to Vegas for a conference and to hike with a longtime friend of mine, and then the very next weekend, I’m going to New York City and then off to the woods for a ladies retreat that is supposed to be full of magic and transformation. I’ll be trying out some new modalities of healing that I’m excited about.
  5. A time you don’t want to forget – This isn’t specifically about a time, unless you consider my childhood a time.I don’t want to ever forget where I come from. Coming from the Midwest has played a significant role in the hardworking adult human that I have grown into, and I never want to forget that. I love going home to Michigan to remind myself of my grit, resilience, and work ethic.
  6. A trip you want to take this year – I am going to travel somewhere internationally this year, in 2018. It will be an English-speaking country, as it was recommended to me by someone who travels internationally often that for a first-timer, going to a country where I know the language is probably in my best interest. Australia? Ireland? Not sure yet. But it’s happening before the end of the year.

Well, that wasn’t so bad, now, was it?

1. What are you most looking forward to? I’m looking forward to this new year and working towards my fitness goals and my daughter going to college. As far as work, my goals are fulfilling every woman’s dream of looking beautiful in our clothes.

2. Three goals for this month. 1 selling 100 items. Finish my fast for church. Get back on my normal workout regimen after the holidays.

3. Describe your day in 10 words. Hectic. Work. Roosters. Sister. Massage. Cats. Costco. Starbucks. Fasting. Mothering.

5. A time you don't want to forget. My daughter’s life growing up.

6. A trip you want to take this year. I would like to go to cedar point after my daughter graduates.
